The LATE SHIFT
What is it About?
"Primal from start to finish. Every decision you make matters to survive the night".
From the very beginning of this crime thrill ride produced by developer and publisher Wales Interactive, the protagonist Matt played by actor Joe Sowerbutts is introduced as a man who doesn't see a way to get off the hamster wheel. Wales interactive who gained popularity with titles such as Maid of Sker, a fps horror survival game that is draped in old British lore are known to create extremely engaging storylines. In 2017 the publisher released The Late Shift on all platforms.
This game, if you can call it that is primal from start to finish. Every decision you make matters to survive the night.
The overall narrative that I picked up on was to make as many selfish decisions as possible. The game's developer says that there 7 possible endings to the Late Shift, 3 of which I have uncovered. The first was actually kind of quick, as the lead character was shot in the parking garage after a poor decision. The second ending took some time longer to uncover.
After deciding to join forces with my kidnappers to perform an auction heist, I was faced with many more decisions. Let's see, I was able to successfully negotiate a price for my services, I had a 007 moment where the lead robber and I punched in synchronized codes to escape the auction house after knocking out security (seriously I thought that guy with the cart died) and making the fatal mistake of visiting Mr. Woe. After *walking away from a fatal crash that only left Matt and May-Ling (Haruka Abe) alive next on the agenda was taking the goods to Mr. Woe, who we find out doesn't even want what we have because of the Tchoi crime family. Yes, that's right the Tchois, infamous killers in the UK from China.
After Matt has gotten his ass kicked by Tchoi Jr. You're then sent on a mission to retrieve the stolen goods, why because May-Ling double crossed everyone she encountered. This now takes the lead and I down a series of rabbit holes. More decisions that will ultimately cost the life of a few more before the night is over with. Decisions that will ultimately land you in the office of Mr. Parr who with May-Ling orchestrated this terrible plan.
Mr. Parr ultimately proposes a deal to Matt that could save everyone. At this point trust is non-existent, and yet you have to make a decision. Remember! selfishness or selflessness. Your survival from this point hangs on whether or not the Tchois want to keep you alive. Like I said earlier I found 2 more endings apart from the parking garage. My hopes were to keep May-Ling alive, and I did not. To be honest I don't know if she really survives. That's as far as I will take it, because there are many more surprises in store. If you made it this far, then I think you would really enjoy playing or even watching this game.
