AFC Week 1 Roundup - CFM Season 03
If u did not see the Chargers v Saints game boy did u miss a good one.
First, let me take you back to the preseason week 3 where the fore mention teams faced off (though it was the preseason) the Saints beat up all on the chargers in all phases of the game to the point where the team reportedly "checked out and packed it up" said one source close to the team. This week one matchup however had the feel of a playoff game, Jimmy G the QB of the Saints had a stellar performance to the tune of 334yards 3 TD 142.0 passer rating completing 68% of his passes. Kamara was nonexistent in the rushing game with 8 carries 33 yards as the Chargers shut that all the way down but played a part in passing game with 5 receptions for 72 yards. Culminating in a 28-33 loss.
BJ Holiday finished the night with 288 passing 2 TD and 1 int but looked under duress all night as the kept flushing him from the pocket almost as if it was part of gamelan. The key that makes the engine run Mitch Griffin had a busy night totting the rock 30 times for 100 yards get 3.3 per carry and 2 TD. Jaylen Waddle big FA acquisition did what he was brought in to do catching 5 passes for 140 and 2 TDs.
This game for me presented more questions than answers:
Can Griffin take on being the bulk of offense all year?
Is Holiday the answer for what the chargers want to do offensively?
Do they have enough to knock off the Broncos and win the division this year?
In Kansas City the Chiefs hosted The Vegas Raiders in what turned out to be a rout.
The Focus on the matchup will be on the Raiders. James "Jimmy" Walker in his NFL debut had a game that he would soon want to forget about. 263 passing yards 1 TD 3INT with. 58.7 passer rating.
Josh Jacob and Tony Pollard combined for 57 rush yards on 22 carries and 1 TD. Albert Okwuegbunam led Vegas receivers with 8 receptions 64 yards and a TD. With Davante Adams hauling in 3 receptions 55 yards a relatively quiet game for him, and Will Fuller with 3 for 49, no TDs.
In the game the Raiders early showed success with both the running a short passing by surprisingly the defense which came into the season with the least number of questions simply let them down. Some drop off was to be expected having a QB first time starter coming into the season. But I think we all counted on and expected to the defense to do its part and support the rookie.
Throughout the game Vegas showed signs of success in both the running and passing games but at times it felt like it was a victim of small success and deviating from the things that were working.
We will see how they respond next week and see if they correct somethings and further implement and install their offense.
My assessment: Perhaps a west coast style would better help the young QB and offense with short passing, seeing as how they showed major success on passes shorter than 20 yards and because Walker is still developing as a down field passer (as far as accuracy). Run, Run, Run, the ball it still keeps the defense honest the whole game and I think they see major success instantly.
The Broncos v Buccaneers game was literally a dice game!
That's right a power grid failure near the Broncos stadium completely took out an NFL game. The first we have ever seen. As the league has to progress to the next week in the season both organization owners decided it would be best to settle the score over a dice game, in the home team's locker room. Denver would take the advantage and break everyone's pocket at the conclusion of the match. Hot Hands for sure, but still questions are circling around WR Pickens involvement in a parking garage altercation after the dice game that resulted in a jeweler's injuries. More on this story and possible suspension?
